JOSEPH JOHN RAMIA September 17, 1930-April 14 2011 Joe was a man well-loved by all that knew him. Fondly known to his staff and friends as "JR", Joe was a man of good spirits, great humor and always welcomed you with a handshake and hand on the shoulder. He was generous, loyal, brilliant, and enjoyed a good laugh. Joe was a beloved father of six children and is survived by his wife of 56 years, Phyllis Ramia, and four remaining children, Mark, Michele, Sean, and Christina. He was a faithful husband, caring brother, fun-loving uncle, and generous grandpa. Joe's life was the culmination of the American Dream as he worked hard to make a success in life to share with his family. Born in Detroit, Michigan, Joe graduated with a Master's Degree in Chemical Engineering from UC at Berkeley. After serving 2 years in the Army as a Staff Sgt. during the Korean War, Joe joined the Shell Company in Emeryville, CA. It was then that he saw the opportunity to get into home development with his brother-in-law. This led to building many homes in CA and ultimately a prominent position with Gentry Homes, Ltd., then a small company in Hawaii. With one trailer, one truck, and one secretary, Joe worked with Tom Gentry to make the company one of the most successful and thriving home builders in the islands. He found innovative ways to make affordable, good housing in a growing market and earned the position of President and CEO. Today, Joe's legacy lives on with thousands of homeowners currently living in Gentry homes throughout the island of Oahu. Joe will always be with us in our hearts, minds and spirits forever. LAWRENCE ROBERT TOLLENAERE Lawrence (Larry) Tollenaere, age 88, passed away peacefully in his home in Ashland, Oregon, on Wednesday April 20, 2011. A native of Chicago, Illinois, Larry attended Morton High School and Iowa State University where he played football and graduated with a B.S in Industrial Engineering. Serving in the U.S. Navy during WWII in the Pacific Theater, he was a Beach Master for the invasion of Okinawa. He returned to Iowa State to teach and complete a M.S. degree in Industrial Engineering where he met his beloved wife, Mary. In 1950 he joined American Pipe and Construction (now Ameron) in Monterey Park, California, where he spent his entire business career. Soon after arriving at Ameron he was dispatched to South America to seek and develop pan-American business opportunities. From this early venture, company projects developed in Chile and Colombia. The latter business remains a wholly-owned Ameron subsidiary with headquarters in Bogota. After serving as President and CEO beginning in 1967 and Chairman of the Board of Directors since 1989, he retired in 1993. Under his leadership, Ameron made significant contributions to the heavy construction industry, particularly in the use of large diameter concrete and steel pipe for the construction of major water transportation projects in the American West, the Middle East, and South America. Additional academic degrees include a M.S. in Business Administration from the University of Southern California Graduate School and an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Claremont Graduate School. Active in business, cultural and civic affairs, Larry served on the board of directors of Parsons Corporation, Pacific Life Insurance Company, Newhall Land and Farming Company, Gifford-Hill-American, Inc. on the board of Avery Dennison Corporation for over 30 years. Other Board and Trusteeships include Chairing the Board of Overseers for The Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens; emeritus membership on the Board of Fellows of the Claremont Graduate Center; and a past president and honorary director of The Beavers. Additionally Larry was an active member and past president of the California Club and member of the Jonathan Club, Bohemian Club and Lincoln Club. A wine connoisseur, he was a member of both the Commanderie de Bordeaux and Confrerie des Chevaliers du Tastevin. An avid sportsman, he enjoyed fly fishing and grouse shooting in Scotland each August. Larry was devoted to his family. One treasured memory, shared by all, is the celebration of Larry and Mary's diamond wedding anniversary with their family in Maui. He was fond of reminding his family that "Trifles make perfection but perfection is no trifle" and reflected this thought in all he did. Larry will be truly missed by his wife of 63 years, Mary Elizabeth (nee Hansen); five children, Elizabeth Walsh, Homer Tollenaere (Virginia), Stephanie Tollenaere Goerdt (Peter), Caswell Abrams (Matt); Mary Jennifer Damon-Tollenaere (Matt); and ten grandchildren, all of whom he loved dearly. MARGARET LUCAS MONTGOMERY Margaret Lucas Montgomery died April 20, 2011 in San Francisco after an extended illness. She was born in Richmond, Virginia to William L. and Marie H. Lucas on August 15, 1921 and was the widow of Francis (Frank) R. Montgomery of Honolulu, Hawaii. Margaret graduated Phi Beta Kappa from The College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. She served in the U. S. Navy World War II WAVES, a source of great pride to her, and received her Master's degree from Columbia University. Moving to San Francisco gave Margaret career opportunities that led her into executive personnel management at Bechtel Corporation. During her long business career there, she fulfilled important overseas assignments in Europe and the Middle East and served as a mentor to young women. Since her marriage to Frank in 1981, Margaret divided her time between San Francisco and Honolulu. She lamented leaving each one, only to rejoice at returning to the other. An avid traveler, Margaret toured everywhere from Antarctica to Bhutan and never ceased learning and absorbing the riches of the cultures and countries she visited. Margaret was a devotee of opera and symphony and was a generous supporter of religious, arts and educational organizations. She gave of her time by volunteering, including serving as a docent at lolani Palace for over 25 years. Also in Honolulu, she was a member of P.E.O. Survivors in the Lucas family include brother William B. Lucas (Ann) of Richmond, Virginia; niece Jane L. Smith (Steve and children Margaret, Walker and Lucas) of Athens, Georgia; and nephews W. Guy Lucas and Jay B. Lucas (Annette and children Valerie and John) of Raleigh, North Carolina. Survivors in the Montgomery family include Norma Montgomery Rayl (Robert) of Saratoga, California; Thomas Montgomery (Marion) of Durango, Colorado; Sean Montgomery (Marissa) of Los Angeles, California; and Kevin Montgomery of Saratoga, California. MARY JANE VAN BUREN Died April 6, 2011 at her home in Salt Lake City, Utah. She lived a life full of adventure and learning and died peacefully at the age of 84 with her family nearby. Mary Jane was born on November 15, 1926 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and adopted at the age of 2 by William and Josephine Rankin. She earned a Bachelor of Arts from Central State Teachers College in Stevens Point, Wisconsin and a Master of Arts in English from the University of Wisconsin. In 1968 Mary Jane moved with her family to Hawaii, where she lived for the next 25 years. She worked as a legislative aide for Hawaii state representatives Lisa Naito and Jack Larsen. Following her tenure at the state legislature, she worked for the Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii, eventually attaining the position of Vice President for Public Relations. She was also active with the Honolulu Community Theatre. Mary Jane is survived by her daughter Jessica Van Buren; daughter Cassandra Van Buren and her husband Keith Cormier; and her granddaughters Emma and Austen Van Burns, all of Salt Lake City. She was preceded in death by her dear friend Bob Hemphill. No service will be held. MARGARET KRETSCHMER STEWART, "DODY," Was born 8/14/21, in Denver, Colorado and died on 4/22/11, in Sebastopol, CA. She attended University of Iowa where she pledged Gamma Phi Beta. She worked at Fitzsimmons Army Hospital in Denver during the War and later for the Bureau of Mines in Boulder City on basic magnesium. After the war, she ran an insurance office in Long Beach, CA. Margaret took the ship to Hawaii in 1946, where she met and married Alan Stewart while working at Theo H Davies & Company. Before their three children were born, Margaret volunteered with the League of Women Voters in Honolulu on water issues. The family lived in Hawaii until 1975, when Margaret and Alan moved to The Mainland and settled in Santa Rosa in 1979. After Alan Stewart died in 1990, Margaret moved to Oakland where she worked with SHHH (Self Help for the Hard of Hearing) for several years to educate health care providers about how to work with hard of hearing patients. She moved to Sebastopol in 1998. Margaret is survived by her three daughters, Julie Lucke (Bruce) of Rio Vista, CA, Jean Stewart (Hank Washburn and daughters Sarah and Anna) of New Sharon, Maine, and Heidi Stewart (John Weinstein and children Alex and Hana) of Sebastopol. |
