She is survived by daughter, Bino (Tom) Alexion of Arizona; brothers, Albert Silva, Gabriel "Sonny" Silva; sisters, Irene (Art) Moreno, Margie (Carl) Cryar of California; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. ALVERNA ULULANI Y.K. YUEN Alverna Ululani Y. K. Yuen, 82, of Alewa Heights passed away peacefully surrounded by family on April 17, 2011. Born and raised in Pauoa, she graduated from Sacred Hearts Academy, Class of 1947. After high school, she worked for her father's auto parts company. She married Kenneth who was her husband for 59 years and they raised four sons. Alverna volunteered at Maryknoll Grade School where she and best friend, Lucille Druecker started Maryknoll's first snack bar. She was an avid sportswoman, competing as a ranked badminton player, and playing tennis and golf with friends and family members. She loved to fish, cook, sew, and play cards with friends and her grandchildren. Her home became the central location for get-togethers and celebrations. She enjoyed preparing a weekly dinner for family members living in Hawaii and looked forward to their company. Once the demands of homemaking subsided, Alverna returned to work as an Executive Secretary with Brewer Environmental Industries (BEI) where she would retire after 20 years of employment. During her years at BEI, she was a member of the Professional Secretaries International. She enjoyed following BEI's softball teams during their annual neighbor island tournaments. During her retirement years, she and Kenneth made about 3 trips yearly to visit her sons, grandchildren, nieces and nephews living on the mainland. These trips often included side trips to Las Vegas. She became a member of Halau Hula Kamamolikolehua and enjoyed performing with the troupe. She opened her home to her halau members for practices. Alverna worshiped at Blessed Sacrament Church where she was baptized, confirmed and married. She is survived by husband, Kenneth, sons, Kevin, Chris (Norine), Kent (Lynn) and Kenn (Kimberly), grandchildren Sondra, Alika, Ryan, Garrett, Derrick, Kainoa and Keahi, sisters Audrey Vance and Alexa Hashimoto, brother Alexander Ho and hanai sister, Catherine Dela Pena. Alverna's warmth, kindness and love will be dearly missed. Catholic mass celebrated on Friday, April 29th at 3:30pm at Blessed Sacrament Church Followed by Visitation at 4:30pm to 6:00pm Celebration of Life at 6:00pm Inurnment at National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl on Monday, May 2nd at 8:30am Aloha Attire / No Flowers

IRENE HARROD COLLINS HEDEMANN

IRENE HARROD COLLINS HEDEMANN Irene Hedemann, 89, of Kaneohe, passed away peacefully at home April 17, 2011. Irene Harrod was born November 19, 1921 in Louisville, Kentucky, and grew up in Southern California. She attended undergraduate studies at the University of California at Berkeley (Cal) and graduated from the University of California at Los Angeles. She joined the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority in 1942 while at UCLA. Irene completed her post-graduate studies in physical therapy at Stanford University. Choosing which football team to root for when each alma mater played each other was always a fun challenge. She admitted, though, that she always had a soft spot for Cal. Irene moved to Hawai'i in 1946 after marrying George F. Collins (deceased). She was active in the Junior League of Honolulu while raising three children. After marrying F. Frederick Hedemann (deceased), she became active with the Garden Club of Honolulu. Irene was an avid tennis player until the age of 80, travelled extensively, and loved a good game of bridge, which she began playing in college and enjoyed throughout her lifetime. She is survived by two sons: George Holbrook Collins and wife Madeleine (of McHenry, Maryland), Charles Harrod Collins and wife Paula (of Palo Alto, California); and daughter KC Collins (of Kaneohe); six grandchildren and one great grandchild. A celebration of life is pending. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory are suggested for Windward United Church of Christ, 38 Kaneohe Bay Drive, Kaneohe, HI 96734.

She was born in Chicago, IL. Devotion to her husband, family, friends, was her life and she lived it with grace and enthusiasm. She was an avid sports fan and developed strong, lifelong friendships, some since high school. She is an example of a truly giving spirit. She is survived by husband Paul, sons Michael, and wife Diana of Bartlett, IL and Gregory of Elgin, IL and beloved grandchildren John and Sarah. She will be laid to rest in Chicago, IL. The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff of Kaiser Medical Center, Hale Ho Aloha and St. Francis Hospice for their compassion and care. NAPUA SAMS & KA'EO SAMS

NAPUA SAMS & KA'EO SAMS Ka'eo Sams formerly of O'ahu died January 28, 2009, in North Carolina of complications from diabetes. At the time of his death, he was survived by his mother Napua, now deceased. He was preceded in death by his Hanai Tutus Aunty Nina Tanaka and Girly Ho`opi`i. Survivors include aikane Keli`I and sister Kainani as well as numerous hanai brothers and sisters and nieces and nephews. He was employed by the National Songwriters Guild for more than 20 years and later became a member of the Hawaiian Academy of Recording Artists. Napua Sams, Ka'eo's Mother, passed away December 19, 2010 from Alzheimer's disease. They were both preceded in death by Napua's husband and Ka'eo's father, Marvin Sams as well as Napua's brother, and Ka'eo's uncle Charles Bilgere. Both Napua and Ka`eo were members of Halau O Kia and were honored to entertain at the Hawaiian Regent, Royal Hawaiian, the Elks Club The Willows and Washington Place and other venues around the islands. They were a members of St Augustine Church where a Funeral Mass will be said on Easter Monday April 25, 2011 at 5:00 pm. On the following day, April 26, 2011, they will be buried at Hawaii Memorial Park at 10:00 am. They are now singing and dancing hula with the angels


 


 

RAYMOND MASARU IKEHARA

RAYMOND MASARU IKEHARA May 1935 – April 2011 Raymond "Ike" Masaru Ikehara, of Kailua, retired Honolulu Police Department Lieutenant, passed peacefully on April 18th. He was born in Honolulu on May 10, 1935 and graduated from McKinley High School. His passions were music and baseball. Ray was a member of the Honolulu Youth Symphony and the National Guard Marching Band. He played baseball for the Hawaii Senior League and other leagues. He retired from HPD after 25 years of service and later was Loss Prevention Manager for Windward Mall Sears for nearly 10 years. He and Betty celebrated 53 years of marriage. Ray is survived by wife Betty Amano Ikehara, Raynor (son) & Janel Ikehara, Rona (daughter) & Rey Ikehara-Quebral, Charles (brother) & Mildred Ikehara, second mother Nancy Ikehara, and grandchildren: Rylan & Chantel Ikehara, and Ripley & Ricky Quebral. Preceded in death by father Seiko Ikehara, mother Yoshiko Ikehara, sister Evelyn Bransfield, step-sister Patsy Izumigawa, and half-brother James Oshiro. Graveside service at Valley of the Temple, Saturday April 30, 2011 at 12 noon with luncheon to follow at Valley of the Temple Chapel lanai. Casual attire. "Always in our hearts"


 


 

ROBERT W. PULLEY

ROBERT W. PULLEY Robert W. Pulley was born in Hamilton Ohio in 1931. He moved to Hawaii in 1962 after serving as a fighter pilot in the United States Navy. He helped pioneer the development of high rise condominiums in Waikiki with projects such as the Wailana, Yacht Harbor Towers and Canterbury Place. He later expanded his business to include real estate syndications both in Hawaii and on the mainland. He also brought Burger King to Hawaii by developing a successful franchise here during the 1970′s and 80′s. He passed away on April 2nd, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife, Doris Stanfill Pulley, children Richard R. Pulley, Jennifer L. Pulley, four grandchildren: Brandon Myers, Jessica Rosenberry, Kaitlyn Rosenberry, Austin Pulley and brothers John, Tom and William Pulley. Private services at Punchbowl Cemetary.
